Mental imagery is the experience of simulating sensory information—sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, or movement—in your mind without external stimulation. When you "picture" a beach, "hear" a song in your head, or "feel" the texture of velvet, you are using mental imagery. It varies widely between people: some have very vivid imagery, others have little or none (aphantasia). The Imagination Index measures vividness and related qualities across six senses (visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, motor) to give you a multisensory picture of your imagination.
